Description
An extraordinary 15th-century palazzo of exceptional beauty, revealing its secrets to the fortunate few, on the banks of the Grand Canal.
Rarely do we see a Venetian property of such standing and so immaculately restored that it takes one’s breath away.
So let us introduce you to the Gothic Palazzo Angelo gently kissing the water’s edge between the Rialto and San Samuele, yet away from the crowds and offering ravishing views, moments from Campo Sant’ Angelo in the ‘sestiere’ of San Marco.
Sharing this super-prestigious stretch of the Canale Grande with such historically hallowed neighbours as the famous Palazzo Mocenigo and the fairytale Palazzo Pisani Moretta directly opposite, the illustrious Palazzo Angelo encapsulates 4 superior apartments, each set to exceed your expectations of a Venetian luxury rental property.
Marrying a meticulously considered décor with a timeless air of privilege (along with a sense that a Venetian ‘home’ simply doesn’t get better than this!) the palazzo can host up to 28 guests when booked exclusively and boasts an exclusive Grand Canal water gate (porta dell’ acqua) for direct travel by private water taxi.
Once the property of the ancient Garzoni family (originally from Bologna, they later became citizens of the Venetian Republic) and once home to the magnificent library of the notable historian, Pietro Garzoni (1652-1719), the palace is blessed with a truly memorable panoramic vista captured by Canaletto in his 1725 painting ‘Grand Canal: Looking North-East towards the Rialto Bridge’.
Discretely accessed landside via its ‘secret’ arch-and-column-fringed internal courtyard, Palazzo Angelo’s 4 apartments are of differing sizes and styles.
Served by stairs and lift and offering a host of contemporary accoutrements (including air-conditioning and Wi-Fi) they comprise:
Palazzo Angelo Piano Nobile (1st and 2nd Floors reached by lift – Sleeping 10 guests)
Remarkable in position, layout and ambience and offering guests all the privacy and exclusivity expected of such a prime address, the piano nobile’s deluxe and ultra-comfortable accommodation covers two floors of the palazzo and includes both the ‘primo’ and ‘secondo’ piani nobili (noble floors) of this supremely handsome property.
A lift or stairs take us to the:
1st Floor where we find the apartment’s capacious and high-ceilinged main sitting / reception rooms… flooded with light and a truly dazzling setting for special events and social gatherings, this floor includes:
• The palazzo’s magnificent main formal ‘salone’ – a ravishing, rose-tinted central reception space replete with colourful frescoes, stucchi galore, antique gilt-edged mirrors lit by twinkling Murano chandeliers, and drawing the eye to the fore, breathtaking floor-to-ceiling Gothic Trefoil windows opening onto a wonderful stone balcony looking onto the Grand Canal…
• A second splendidly attired dual-aspect sitting room with a pair of tall Gothic windows opening onto the Grand Canal to the front plus another to the side enjoying far-reaching views up to the iconic Rialto Bridge … cast your eyes over the canalscape immortalized by Canaletto
• The piano nobile’s uber-stylish dining room hosting guests around a spectacular carved and glass-topped dining table
• A professional kitchen with Gaggenau appliances (a private chef and service staff can be arranged upon request – please enquire for further details)
• A studio
• A ballroom
• A pair of guest bathrooms
An impressive internal marble staircase (no photos) or private lift (exclusive to apartment) rise to the 2nd Floor where we find the piano nobile’s spacious sleeping accommodation comprising:
• A second central ‘salone’ repeating the space and outlook of that on the floor below, around which sit the apartment’s 5 quietly opulent double en-suite bedrooms
Contemporary in design and immaculately tailored in fine fabrics and with custom fittings, all bedrooms have their own rather spectacular marble-attired bathrooms each designed and created to echo the colour-theme of its associated bedroom (indeed, daily ablutions have never been such a joy!)
* Are you part of a larger group who’d like to stay close to each other but in separate apartments? We offer 3 other apartments in this beautiful Venetian palazzo: Palazzo Angelo Rialto Luxury Apartment, Palazzo Angelo Frari Altana and Palazzo Angelo Fenice Loft
OUR COMMENT
In a word ‘spectacular’… and one of the few, if not the only, Venetian luxury properties available for short rental comprising not one, but two, entire noble floors of a Grand Canal palazzo.
Wonderfully situated in an exclusive area known for its antique shops and galleries close to Campo Santo Stefano – one of Venice’s best-loved squares - the Palazzo Grassi Museum of Modern Art and the Accademia Bridge leading over to the Accademia Galleries and the district of Dorsoduro.
Within easy reach of a selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops, including a grocery/delicatessen and a well-stocked local wine shop.
Within a stone’s throw of 2 vaporetto (water bus) stops for easy travel around town (San Samuele - Line 2 and Sant' Angelo - Line 1), and within steps of the 'traghetto' service (situated literally beside the palazzo) ferrying passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to San Toma (close to the Frari) in the district of San Polo.
Moments to the gallery of interior designer Chiarastella Cattana - a discreetly sophisticated showroom of fine and distinctively woven textiles and furnishings and, for scent-lovers, steps away from the Venice outlet of the famous Florentine ‘Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella’ – one of the oldest pharmacies in the world and one time fragrance maker to Catherine de’ Medici.

Performing a duet with neighbouring Ca’ Dell’ Opera Terrace, come join us as we sing the praises of new Opera Divina a diva-licious deluxe property in laid-back Dorsoduro, freshly restored in collaboration with design partners, Archflorence We’ve pulled out all the stops in transforming this long-forgotten property into a perfectly composed tribute to Italian craftsmanship and flair… a symphony of opulent finishes and fabrics and bespoke furniture tailored with precision and care. Charmingly located in sleepy Campo degli Incurabili, near the Peggy Guggenheim, the Accademia Galleries, and the Zattere’s spectacular canal views, L'Opera Divina sleeps 8(+2) guests in 4(+1) bedrooms arranged over 3 floors and accessed by stairs*. Taking design cues from its incredibly popular sister apartment and hosting up to 19 guests when taken together, the apartment showcases custom bathrooms and cool terrazzo flooring and is air-conditioned** throughout for your comfort in warm weather. Themed in such a way as to ‘bring the outside in’ through botanical prints, well positioned lighting, and a range of colours that sing, the extensive accommodation offers Wi-Fi and comprises: • Your own private doorway on the campo leading into the: Ground Floor • An entrance hallway with mirrored closets, one cleverly concealing a Miele combined washing machine/dryer which comes in useful during extended stays Doorway into: • A peaceful double bedroom to the rear of the property with a mirrored wardrobe, a double bed dressed in shades of pepperoncini and mushroom (which can be split into twins upon request), and a stylish en suite bathroom with bathtub and shower over Staircase* from the hallway leading up to the: 1st Floor • A fabulous beamed main sitting room in a harmonious mix of neutrals, limes and sunset orange with French windows opening onto a small Juliet balcony, a large L-shaped sofa for relaxing, custom-designed carpeting and walls of palazzo-style window-panelled mirrors framed and enhanced by the most extraordinary golden shell-shaped silk lamps which serve to maximise the light and sense of space within the room • A super-attractive small sitting room/TV room with botanical prints, a double sofa-bed for 2, shelving and mirrored wardrobe and French windows opening onto a small Juliet balcony • A contemporary kitchen/dining room in salicornia green comprehensively kitted out with integrated Bosch and Miele appliances (including a wine fridge!), a dining suite seating 8 with banquette seating and ‘ghost’ chairs and French windows opening onto a bijou Juliet balcony looking onto the quiet comings and goings along the Rio Terà San Vio • A luxurious and restful principal bedroom overlooking a neighbouring private palm-filled garden to the rear and handsomely attired in gentle greens and olive grey with a writing desk, a mirrored wardrobe and a double bed (dressed in Casamance’s ‘Paradisiaca’ fabric and which can be split into twins upon request) plus a splendidly tiled en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower • A pristine bathroom with large shower to the left of the 1st floor landing that serves the main sitting room, small sitting room/TV room and kitchen Staircase* (shorter than the first) rising up to the 2nd floor and offering a glimpse St. Mark’s Bell Tower and the Salute from the top 2nd Floor • The cutest ‘small double’ bedroom with wooden beams, a pair of slim wardrobes and a French-size bed sleeping 2 upholstered in Anna French’s ‘Palampore’ fabric – cosy in ambience, decorated with a pair of ‘oeil de sorcière’ convex mirrors and with a separate private bathroom with large shower just a few steps away • The final and totally gorgeous double bedroom in shades of violetta di Chioggia (local artichoke) and mushroom with a double bed (which can be split into twins upon request), a wardrobe and a sparkling en suite bathroom with bathtub and separate shower * Please note that the staircases are quite steep and, due to the age of the building, some of the carpeted stone treads are uneven. There is no lift Important: please note that the apartment only accepts fully supervised children over 6 years of age or under 1 year (non-walking babies) because of the internal stairs OUR COMMENT A superb transformation in delightful surroundings and fully deserving of a standing ovation! A short stroll to the Church of the Salute, the Palazzo Cini Gallery and to the Punta Della Dogana Center of Contemporary Art at Dorsoduro’s eastern tip, and close to a great choice of eating places and bars including Agli Alboretti, Lineadombra and Ristorante Riviera for fine dining, and Osteria Al Squero, Corner Pub and Cantinone Gia Schiavi for spritz and cicheti. An easy walk to 4 vaporetto (water bus) stops – Zattere Spirito Santo, Zattere, Salute and Accademia for travel around the city (note that St. Mark’s Square can be reached by vaporetto from Salute in under 5 minutes on Line 1!), to 2 Conad supermarkets – one just behind the Zattere Spirito Santo vaporetto stop and the other at the western end of the Zattere – and to the traghetto at Calle Lanza / Calle del Traghetto San Gregorio which, during operating hours, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the traghetto stop beside the Gritti Palace in the district of San Marco. Also within easy reach of the Alilaguna boat stop connecting the Zattere to Venice's Marco Polo Airport. **Please note that the operation of air-conditioning and heating are subject to municipality regulation. In general, heating is available from mid-October to mid-April, while air-conditioning is available from mid-April to mid-October. Please contact us for further information.8 reviews

DIMORA ORLANDO mansion with private garden NEW LISTING! A Venetian Restoration Beyond Your Wildest Imagination Where to start…?! What a journey and what a joy it’s been to follow this inspirational transformation from humble homestead to magnificent mansion in Venice’s Dorsoduro sestiere. As real estate experts of 25+ years’ standing we often think we’ve seen it all, until we come to know a property that, quite simply, blows our minds. Newly restored Venice home of Milan resident and philanthropist Paolo and his family (close friends of Filippo, DI / VOV-founder and owner) and recently launched for short rental to well-deserved plaudits on its dedicated Instagram page, the bespoke Dimora Orlando represents a true labour of love, flawlessly curated by its owners and culminating in an astonishing city base where their family and friends (and now yours!) can unite in unparalleled surroundings to celebrate the sheer pleasure of being together in Venezia. A rare Venetian residence for which the term ‘treasure chest’ was coined, the eclectic interior is a well-heeled maximalist’s dream. Situated within a peaceful "passeggiata" of the dazzling Zattere waterfront, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the iconic domes of Salute and the former home of legendary designer Hubert de Givenchy in what is surely one of the most prestigious and genteel parts of Dorsoduro, and indeed in all of Venice – and nurtured throughout its (extensive and reassuringly expensive!) rejuvenation by an exceptionally savvy crew of craftsmen and the architectural experts at ArchFlorence – this jaw-dropping mansion sleeps 10 (+2) within a feather-soft cocoon of comfort, where notable original art, cherished family heirlooms bridging generations past and present, and a whirlwind of whimsical collectables vie for your attention and serve to underscore the heady vibe of unrestrained indulgence. Encapsulating 5 seductive en suite double bedrooms sparkling with Italian confidence and personality, and spanning a staggering 470 sqm over 3 luxury-laden floors with a pretty courtyard garden to the rear, the fully air-conditioned dimora boasts an internal lift serving all floors (a rarity in Venice) and accommodation comprising: Ground Floor A private front door with keylock and digital electronic keypad leading into the elegant entrance hallway with stairs or lift to the 2nd (top) floor, where we find Dimora Orlando’s primary living spaces and where we start our internal tour working down floor by floor Lift opening directly into the… 2nd Floor, home to: An extraordinary double sitting room where deep sea-green polished marmorino walls recall the tumultuous waters of ocean-going adventure and the vaulted whitewashed timbers overhead act as a dramatic backdrop to a series of exceptional furnishings and objets d’art Original paintings by celebrated English artist Billy Childish* adorn the walls, while plush hand-loomed Fortuny and Rubelli fabrics and the most luxurious seating and velvet sofas you can imagine, surround a glass-and-Perspex coffee table protecting a slice of fossilised tree from the Triassic period (252-201 million years ago). A pair of throne-like Russian pine chairs by famous Italian sculptor Mario Ceroli from the ‘Mobili Nella Valle’ series for Poltronova, Florence (1977) stand sentinel at the room’s far end opposite ‘Cavalli’, an equine relief in balsa and Russian pine, also by Ceroli. A carved monumental fireplace, framing a hand-crafted circular glass and enamel mirror by OOM, provides a magical focus to the room, while taking pride of place above it stands a wall pedestal mount of a Greater Kudu antelope nobly gazing out across the room in all its defiant glory *’High Atlas Walker’ (2010) and ‘Spirit Guides and Other Guardians Joining Heaven and Earth’ (2022) A superbly equipped beamed primary kitchen in green with granite worktop, mirrored splashback, iconic Fornasetti decorative porcelain wall plates and – with a nod to those traditional Venetian bacari (traditional taverns) still in existence – a collection of antique copper water pitchers hanging up on high A triumph of a dining room in toasty ‘Uluru’ terracotta with an oval dining suite hosting 12 guests beneath a twinkling Murano chandelier, flanked on one side by Robyn Burgess’s ‘Snowplough, Bloodwood Forest, 2008’ purchased by Paolo at auction on a recent trip to Australia and, on the other, a reinterpretation by Giulia Michon Pecori of ‘The Nubian Giraffe’ by Jacques Laurent-Agasse, 1827 Returning to the far end of the sitting room and passing the custom-built library, which displays an enchanting model of an antique Dutch Nef fully rigged sailing ship – a hint at the owner’s long shipbuilding heritage – we in turn reach… The softly lit and sensual principal bedroom in sandy desert shades with a double bed, a mesh-panelled wardrobe, a splendid pair of KOK Maison ‘Emmanuelle’ Peacock rattan armchairs and, instilling the room with a fiery sense of drama, Carlo Gavazzeni Ricordi’s colourful ‘Theatres of Invention’ photographic artwork, while the pristine tawny-onyx en suite bathroom with Devon&Devon rolltop bathtub and separate shower is simply divine Descending this floor by stairs or lift, we enter the… 1st Floor with its maritime vibe where we find 3 further ship-shape en suite bedrooms: A delightfully presented 2nd double bedroom continuing the seafaring theme with a double bed, a seating area, a mesh-panelled wardrobe and the most decadent sun-and-sea-inspired en suite bathroom in striking blue marble and marmorino I think we’ve ever set eyes on. Characterfully kitted out with a Devon&Devon Mida rolltop bathtub in brushed gold, a separate shower, satin brass fittings and decorated with a collection of adorable box-framed model sailing vessels… it’s a gorgeous space for a spot of pampering that’s sure to float your boat! A charming 3rd double bedroom in neutrals with a double bed that can be made into twins at your request, a beautiful antique wall tapestry making the space feel super-cosy and intimate, a wardrobe just beyond, and a stylish separate en suite bathroom in green marble and marmorino with shower A romantic 4th double bedroom in sea-spray grey with a double canopied bed in ruby red, framed dancing putti, an antique wall tapestry, and a private dressing space to the side (with a door opening onto a veranda and steps leading down to the garden – more of which later!) linking the bedroom to its chic en suite bathroom where a portrait of the owner’s esteemed industrialist great-grandfather greets you as you enter, before opening to reveal a luxe walk-in shower and rolltop bathtub Descending this floor by stairs or lift we return to the… Ground Floor, where we find: The secluded 5th double bedroom with its own private entrance onto the quiet calle outside and which doubles up as an independent studio apartment for 2 – ideal for members of your party who’d like additional privacy or autonomy. Quietly elegant, the room comprises a seating / dining space, a small and cleverly concealed kitchenette suitable for preparing snacks or light cooking, a mirrored wardrobe, a beautifully dressed double bed with Iksel palm tree mural as backdrop and an en suite bathroom with shower Returning to the main entrance hallway passing an impressive wall-mounted copy of the Rosetta Stone and a disguised wood-lined utility area with Miele washing machine and separate tumble dryer we reach… Dimora Orlando’s ‘wine cellar’ / entertaining space Expertly kitted out with wine tastings , its warm and inviting exposed-brickwork is decorated with vintage Japanese Gyotaku rice paper fish prints lending an oriental flavour, the glass-encased climate-controlled wine cellar is furnished with bespoke cabinetry courtesy of the ‘wizards in wood’ carpenters at Falegnameria Matulli, and a gleaming copper-topped central island with stools sets just the right mood for a convivial get-together And to finish our tour of this incredibly special Venetian property, reached by a glazed door… Dimora Orlando’s south-facing and totally private walled courtyard garden where an ancient, gnarled wisteria softens the facade as it reaches for the sky, ivy curls around the staircase railings rising to bedroom 4, and you can sunbathe to your heart’s content as it isn’t overlooked by other properties! Planted with greenery, furnished with cushioned seating, and made even larger thanks to the tall arched mirrors that reflect the light and echo the traces of bricked-up doorways of centuries past, it’s your sanctuary of sunshine in the Dorsoduro sestiere! OUR COMMENT A breathtaking Venetian mansion that bears testament to a life of travel and to a multi-generational family heritage rather closer to home. Luxurious, spacious, perfect for larger gatherings and located in one of our absolute favourite parts of Venice… Close to the Punta Della Dogana Center of Contemporary Art, Campo San Vio and the Palazzo Cini Gallery, the Accademia Galleries and Bridge (and the DI / VOV office just to its side!) Also within a stone’s throw of a variety of highly regarded eating places and bars including Linea d’ Ombra, Ai Gondolieri, Ristorante Riviera and Enoteca Ai Artisti for fine dining and Corner Pub, Osteria Al Squero and Cantinone Gia Schiavi (the locals’ favourite) for great panini / cicheti and spritz! An easy waterside stroll to 2 Conad supermarkets – one at the western end of the Zattere and a smaller one closer to home at Zattere Spirito Santo – and to 4 vaporetto (water bus) stops – Zattere Spirito Santo (with no bridges to cross in between), Zattere, Salute and Accademia – for easy travel around the city (note that St. Mark’s Square can be reached by vaporetto from Salute in under 5 minutes on Line 1!) Within a stone’s throw of the gondola station at Campo San Vio for that obligatory Venice experience (!), the traghetto at Calle Lanza / Calle del Traghetto S. Gregorio which, during operating hours, ferries passengers by gondola across the Grand Canal to the Gritti Palace in the district of San Marco, as well as the recently reopened traghetto service at the Punta della Dogana which carries you across the water directly to the frosted-glass double doors of the legendary Harry’s Bar just beside St. Mark’s Square! Also, within easy reach of the Alilaguna boat stop connecting the Zattere to Venice's Marco Polo Airport. For arrivals between 8.00 p.m. and midnight there is an additional cost for "late arrival" of Euro 50, to be paid in cash upon arrival. We organize arrivals between midnight and one o'clock with an additional cost of Euro 100, after this time we reserve the right to accept the customer always with a supplement to be quantified according to the time of arrival.4 reviews
